Should a build a garden shed to get some privacy from my parents?

I’m a male in my mid 20s living with my parents. Because of the tough economy I have a low paying job so I’m stuck living at home.

As a temporary solution I have thought about building a garden shed in their backyard. I would use it to sleep at night sometimes and sometimes a place to have some privacy. The shed would be small but have a door with a lock.

Some people think this is a cool idea while others think this is ridiculous.
I checked with my city and they do not require a permit for a shed.

The shed would not have a restroom inside. This may be a small problem.
The shed would have a light and a heater.

Rooms for rent in peoples houses go for $ 900 per month in my area.
I would call it a guest house or cottage.

My room at my parents house is right next to thier room. In terms of the shed getting hot during the day I wouldn’t go inside if its hot outside.

What should I know before I build a garden shed in my backyard?

For my senior project, i a building a garden shed in my backyard. I was wondering what i may need to know or what questions i should be asking myself regarding this project.

I have just finished building a cedar 8′x8′ garden shed. I have a trellus with foilage on it north west of the shed about 5′ from corner. My house is about 15′ north of the shed. I would like to decorate the ground with plants and a walkway to door on shed(north side of shed). Lots of shade with little sun on north and evening sun on west of shed. Any suggestioins?

We built a shed on our property about 4 weeks ago. We used #2 gravel for the base. We now have a family of woodchucks that keep burrowing under the shed. They are kicking the stones out and making a terrible mess. We keep filling in their tunnels and they keep remaking them. How do I keep these little buggers out from under my shed?

Something to keep our wood up off the ground and dry.

A garden is a friend that you can visit at any time……..

i live with my folks (due to lack of money, not out of want!) and they have quite a reasonable sized garden. however, they are planning to pave most of it, and what areas they don’t pave are going to build sheds and pergolas etc on. i’m getting into nature photography quite heavily, and wanted to attract alot of UK wildlife into our garden, but i’m having trouble finding a way to do this seeing as they’re going to be wiping out most of the nature from our garden!! does anyone have any tips on bringing animals into a garden such as this?

In my backyard I’m thinking about building buying a garden shed mini cabin to sleep in on some summer nights. The shed would be in the backyard. One concern I have is someone breaking in late at night while inside. The shed I’m looking at buying has wood floors, small windows and a wood panel door. The door is a solid woodfinish on the inside and outside. The door has a handle instead of a doornob. This means the only way to lock the door is with a padlock either on the outside or on the indside.

The shed/mini cabin has woodfinish walls inside. I would be concerned about someone breaking one of the windows at night to break in.

Does anyone have any suggestions?
This would just be a place to sleep maybe at the most once a week.
To make myself feel more comfortable I would want to paint the walls and paint the inside of the door colors that I enjoy.

I would put an airmatress on the floor and sleep in a sleeping bag.
I don’t have any trees to hang a treehouse on. I would just put the shed/mini cabin on the floor of the backyard.

I am thinking of using a 30 amp breaker with 12/3 wire underground in PVC conduit and making an entrance into the building and put a couole of 15A breakers from the lights and power tools. I plan on running 2 fluorescent 8 foot lights, and a small 110v AC unit plus a few receptacles for power tools. Any suggestions from the electrical crowd?

I’m considering building a shed as kind of a changing room/ hang out room by my pool. How much can i expect to spend assuming it will be about 8×12 and i’m doing the construction myself (also there wont be electricty or plumbing) Also how hard will it be to construct and where can i find a simplified verison of the codes that will apply.

Even though this is very basic and silly I have thought about setting up a garden shed in my parents backyard that I could put a cott or bed in. This way I could have some privacy and space from my parents. My laptop has wireless internet. Since the wooden garden shed would have electricity I could pug in a electric portable heater.

The shed would have a concrete floor that I could put rugs on.

The only disadvantage to the shed would be no windows inside or restroom inside. I could go inside the restroom inside the house.

I’m not hand enough to install windows. The inside of the shed would have a wood panel wall and a door that is unpainted. To solve the window solution I could paint the inside of the door a color or design that is something nice to look at.

On thing that may bother me is closing the door while inside at night sleeping. I guess I could get over that.

Where I live we have very mild winters. The coldest it gets is 60 degrees at night. Winds arent a paroblem. The shed could be insulated I guess.

We would like a shed for our yard, probably around 8′ x 10′. We’re looking at the prefab ones from Home Depot, but are wondering if we can afford to have a carpenter build us one that is higher quality. For years I have had this dream of building a garden shed rustic cabin in my parents backyard.

This would be a place of mine to go and read books, take afternoon naps. This garden shed would only be 40 square feet. It wouldn’t have a bathroom inside. Ocassionally I may spend a night or two inside.

Currently I’m a adult in my late 20s. I’m living with my parents still.

If I would build one of these I would be concerned about what my friends would think.

Even though this is a silly fier I would be afraid to close the door if I was inside one of these sheds.
