Building A Garden Shed – Standard Design Or Custom Built?

You’ve decided to build a garden shed, but do you know whether you’d rather have a custom built design or an ‘off the peg’ standard one instead?

Both choices have their own benefits, so it’s simply a case of comparing the two and then choosing the right one for you.

Build A Garden Shed Using A Standard Design

Opting for a standard design cuts out a lot of decision making, because you simply try to choose the best one to meet your needs from the designs that are on offer. With this option, the sizes of doors and windows, etc. will have already been decided, You may be looking for a ‘play house’ for the kids, or just some extra storage space. So if you want the gratification of building your own shed coupled with minimum decision making, then the standard design is probably the one for you.

‘Ready to go’ standard shed designs are readily available.

Build A Garden Shed Using A Custom Built Design

If you are looking for greater input then the custom built design is the best choice. The size of the shed, its doors, and windows, are all decided by you, so can be planned for maximum benefit.  The custom built option allows you to design, develop, and construct your shed. People who are looking to get more out of their shed often go for the custom built shed design.

You’ll find that custom built shed plans are widely available.

You could be looking for a new workshop, a private den, or you’ve decided to work from home. You could be an avid gardener or a DIY’er, etc. By thinking about the reasons why you want to build a garden shed, you’ll be able to find the design that best meets you needs.

Build A Garden Shed

I am 57 years of age and I’ve always had a garden shed – but I’ve never built one.

Following a recent house move to a new place which had no garden shed, I was adamant that I would build a garden shed myself, and it would be the best garden shed that I’d ever owned.

I did my research and due diligence (that’s my age showing!). I found that I had two options. I could build a garden shed using a shed kit, or I could build a garden shed using shed plans. I decided to delve further into each of these options.

GARDEN SHED KIT

I first looked at buying a garden shed kit. If I chose this option then I would look for a shed kit that best suited my needs. The kit which would include all the materials and instructions necessary to build it.

GARDEN SHED PLANS

I then looked at building a garden shed using shed plans. If I chose this option I would find the plans for a shed that best suited my needs. The plans would tell me what tools and materials I would require, and give me instructions on how to build it.

SO HOW DID I BUILD A GARDEN SHED?

Well, the answer is I actually built two sheds!

During my earlier years of life, I had started many projects without planning them properly, only to see them turn into a shambles. Not this time around though!

As I had plenty time on my hands (and a very large garden) I thought I’d take on the ultimate challenge. I would build two sheds, one for storage which I would build using a shed kit, and the other for a workshop which I would build using shed plans.

I decided to build a garden shed using a shed kit first. That way once it was completed I could use it to store the materials for shed number two.

I found the appropriate kit. And in an hour or two I had completed a wonderful looking shed which I was very proud of.

I then found the plans to build a garden shed that would suit my needs, and also made a few minor adjustments such as adding an extra large window. I purchased all of the materials and began my project. With time (about 10 full days) and patience I ended up with a great looking shed that I built ‘from scratch’.

BUILD A GARDEN SHED CONCLUSION

So having done all of that you might be wondering which option is best?

I have to say that there wasn’t much in it, and each one has its own benefits.

They both looked equally as good when they were finished.

The shed built from shed plans took about 10 days but the rewards of self satisfaction were immense.

The shed kit only took a couple of hours to complete but I still built it and take full credit for a great looking shed.

IN SUMMARY

If you have plenty of time on your hands and you want a project which challenges you, then you might prefer to build a garden shed using shed plans.

However if you want the satisfaction of taking on a project but want to see the results more quickly, then you’d probably prefer to build a garden shed using a shed kit.

Take it from me, whatever you choose you will still experience a great deal of pride when your project is finished.
